What Floats Our Boat

.

Guided Walks of historical interest either around Plymouth or up onto the Moors with Colin Brown, qualified Mountain Leader with the MLT board. Colin is brilliant at this, not only has he got a great sense of humour and is very personable, his knowledge of interesting facts, people and places will delight you. Colin is equipped for taking any of you up onto Dartmoor to places you didn’t know existed, and can give you interesting facts about the moors and its secrets and the prison too is an extremely interesting place to visit.

Fun and interesting things are going to be happening here at Jolly Jacks for the autumn and winter and here are a few ideas to ponder. Obviously it depends on the interest shown and the uptake of any evenings listed below, but we want to inject fun and sociability into those darker evenings, and also a chance to meet and make lots of new friends, because that’s what Jolly Jacks is all about, as well as the great food of course.  More detail will be available soon. Please feel free to contact us via email, letter or phone, then we can build from there.

Many of these evenings will have supper too.

J.U.G.S - Just Us GirlS  this is a monthly meeting and a way of getting likeminded girls together for dinner and chat, to listen to entertaining speakers, and a chance for us to raise money for charity, such as when we have our Pink Evening, where everything will be pink. Look out for the date of the next event on our home page, but if you’re interested in joining us, just let us know and we’ll go from there.

Quiz nights
Always a popular favourite here every first Monday of the month - another good, fun night!

Driftwood Art
Last year, Rikkie Carette was one of 300 made redundant from Princess Yachts. He decided to start his own business keeping marinas / harbours and beaches rubbish free. As part of daily work he would remove driftwood from Mayflower Marina in Plymouth and kept the 'interesting' pieces with the intention (one day) to do something he had thought of doing for a long time, making driftwood sculptures. When Jolly Jacks restaurant opened in the marina Rikkie made a piece for the restaurant. This first sculpture was a simple wall mounted piece but it was soon followed with a free standing fish. This gained such immediate positive interest from staff and members of the public that he made more including a goofy puffer fish, a mean looking tuna and an elegant seahorse.

Although it's early days, things have gone very well with the sculptures selling and commissions being taken. He is proud to say that he can make anything to order and no two pieces will ever be the same, truly one offs!

What starts as debris in the sea is turned into art. Not only do you gain an individual piece of art but you know it has contributed to keeping our sea and beaches clean at the same time.
